there is another in the fire.

the trials come

and tribulations bloom,

the garden of vices

will withstand the rain.

you would do well to remember

there is another in the fire.

the tears will spill

and your heart will bleed

and bend

and break.

you would do well to remember

there is another in the fire.

bitter words

will soil pretty mouths

and nights will crush

like gnarly sea bottoms.

you would do well to remember

there is another in the fire.

heels will bruise

and promises crumble ;

cuts will bleed

and eyes will dew.

you would do well to remember

there is another in the fire.

under mist and moon

and sorrow and silence,

you will come to rest

those weary bones.

you would do well to remember

there is another in the fire.

you will be softened and flattened

and alchemized in glory,

and when you emerge 

a sword for the seraphim

you would do well to remember

there is another in the fire.

Damn, Emmy, this is the best thing I have read of yours in a while. Not that those others were poor, just this one is spectacular. That repetitive line ties all of it together, and brings it home with a roar. Wow.

The repetition works so well here Emunah June. There is also a warning. When two are fire, what a lot of heat. Those bitter words can create a hell. An outpouring though, can clear the air. Lead to gold maybe.

Oh my yes, they surely will.
I have been in this situation...and both sides have fire and will fire at the other...and both sides will be soil.
Nicely done, very effective with the repetition of that line.

There is another in the fire - I am going to be repeating that line to myself for a very long time - I really liked the lines: bitter words will soil pretty mouths - I’d like to use that one on my ex-wife but she would fly off the handle as usual. Emunah, I wasn’t sure where you were taking me, and when I got to the word “alchemized” I thought to myself never seen that before. Then I finished the stanza and girl, you just blew me away! Tuesday I meet with a little group of amateur writers in my community. I would like your permission to read them this poem, show them some real writing. Another poem going into my Favorites library.
