like unknown soldiers

like unknown soldiers

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

like unknown soldiers

feedback leaves

left un-raked

unidentified

colors absorbed

in wet autumns

the epiphany of mortality's flight

there are no answers,

only questions burning

with the fall smoke

we all fall down, eventually

some without a word spoken

then lie there uncomfortably

wishing we had been found

among those who could have

identified us as evolving

from a certain tree.

I think the greatest fear most of us have is the fear of being forgotten when we are gone.
I agree that it is deeply insightful.

Deeply moving, Jacob. Your words penetrate. So glad they are not left unspoken.

thank you for your words, lynn
And as we go headlong into the autumn years, we are all prone to have our Peggy Lee moment ("Is that all there is?") Succinct and tightly drawn, hits all of the right notes.

Wonderful interplay of death and autumn working them together the way you did, those middle three stanzas are prime examples of that.

Incredible. There is no let down Jacob you keep rolling and rolling in thunderous ways.

the epiphany of mortality's flight
there are no answers,

only questions burning
with the fall smoke

drifting without answers in the fall smoke...i loved the four lines that left me so drifting...

A lovely write J yes once we are gone that's it, no coming back, no recycling, rebirth, where autumn trees drop leaves then the leaves are reborn in spring

Fall - Nature's great leveller is just like our own. We melt into the swathes of the dead like so many leaves in the park's wet grass, with nary a second glance but for those who love us.
Wonderful poetry Jacob.
