the Confidence Game

the Confidence Game

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the Confidence Game

a certain sunlit morning

behind foreign shades of shame

peeking eyes blink new confidence

apologies bring surface glare to the pane

a heartless recluse

finds company

in shielding surrogate emotions

with others,

who refuse to walk under halcyon skies

pretending clouds,

even when none are in sight.

A superbly penned down piece. "Pretending clouds when none are in sight" beautiful lines. We humans are always concerned about what others say, how they behave and how they think. We sometimes have to show that we are someone very smart, rational and flushed with wisdom, so that the people do not make us lucrative for themselves. Just to achieve something, we have to craft the way we act. The world is a strange place, isn't it?

thank you for your insightful words, Vatsal....

Yes, sometimes we need to pretend that we are strong and wise so that other people won't take advantage of us. Sometimes, pretension is just a defense mechanism...
Great poem! Thanks for the share.

Does anyone have confidence before a shower, breakfast... and brushing your teeth?
Two cups of coffee... then, then you might be rocking it- have no fear.

No, seriously though- this poem feels like you are coming into the light of a new day- weary, unsure, but it's real- uncomfortable and a bit hopeful too.

Without the rain, there are no rainbows, and we all have to walk through it to come out shining on the other side.

Yeah ok, the second line is way out of meter; but you get the gist

Nice one Mr J

Sometimes you've got to fake it to make it. I struggle with this sometimes, I don't necessarily lack confidence, I'd consider myself successful in many ways but I feel unfulfilled yet too proud to show or admit to those close to me that my life is less than perfect. Anyhow, this poem made me think of how we all have a facade, or persona we wear depending on our audience.

yes, we do...all of us...thank you for your insights, Ana.

yes - I certainly understand your last line - not sure why people like to walk around with those invisible clouds but they do. I think having the confidence to lay our burdens down and see through to those clear skies is key to living life to the fullest :)

It's all a mask anyway. Imagine though, if that mask never slipped.
