Baptism by Fire

Baptism by Fire

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Baptism by Fire

at midnight,
September passed
and October was born
but the heat in the delivery room
stifling

everyone sweating
and there was much screaming
autumn leaves wrapped in clover
the umbilical branch
cut,

even as the September mourners
walked by the room dressed in receding green
the sudden death perplexing

when the body still seems so alive
and warm...

This is impressively imaginative! Wow! The way your metaphor sidles up to your straightforward expressions about this transition . . . a million images & feelings popped into my mind! "heat in delivery room" . . . "umbilical branches" . . . "body still seems so alive" . . . too much awesome word crafting to list! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Sometimes time seems impatient and waits upon nothing and no one - seasons are passing before having come to be...time is of the now that’s all we have...another wonderful deeply thought out piece 🌹

Ah the classic equation of life and death, only now in my later years does death seem to the real reason for living, everything is aimed at preservation - thumbs up again Jacob

Such an interesting and melancholic metaphor, j. "Umbilical branch" was great imagery. It is unfortunate that our fall months are being suffocated with summer heat.

Perfectly captures my attitude to the foreboding that is winter, that I might need to go, but I'll be kicking and screaming every inch of the way. But on the plus side, it means I get a seat on the bus all to myself 😀

Untimely heat for the season. Sounds like fall is late in coming, while summer stamps her feet saying she isn't ready to go. You baptized with sweat while over here I have had the torrents on the doorstep. Love the metaphor of the delivery room.
