Gathering

Gathering

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Gathering

sterile enhancement

bigger than life's true breath

golden idols dance in the breeze

and we follow, wayward

heart's absurd contentment

bought and sold

for a pittance of moral fortitude

but lots of green

i found mine in the old pastures

under a Vermont frost

some October way back when

and reveled in the nothingness

but somethingness as the dew

evaporated with my years

we can't buy those kinds of memories

and when the accounting comes

with the reckoning

hearts will sleep restlessly

as what we had evaporates

with the wind,

and what we could have been

becomes an apparition

taunting us for the rest of forever.

Oh those memories. I feel sometimes we don't let go of the memories, even the bad ones, because it allows us to hold one ... and write those poems. So much feeling and living moments found in this wonderful piece, Jacob:)

thank you for your kind review, Pryde,

Sometimes certain times of our lives can feel like another lifetime. Especially when it comes to love gone away.

really love this part

we can't buy those kinds of memories
and when the accounting comes
with the reckoning
hearts will sleep restlessly

thank you for your words, Dale,

Gosh this has such a dark and morbid tone to it Jacob. We chase trivial things when we are young, music, drugs rock and roll and girls. Often on the edge of morality itself until we find a place to settle and someone to settle with. But when they let us down it is harsh and when we look back we still feel the good side which we yearn for but it is a mere ghost now. That is where this took me.
