Trial and Separation

Trial and Separation

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Trial and Separation

heart cuffs,

restraints on love

I want to run free with you

but there are bars waiting to confine my trust

and because my past is a flight risk

there will be no bail set

Eros a tough judge

in this case.

Appreciate the interplay between love and law and it reminds me of the cliche "all is fair in love and war." Never get tired of reading your poems.

thank you for your kind words, MissE,

I like the way the first three lines show the speaker opening himself up, revealing something of the depth of himself. But then, aptly, he slams the book of revelation and returns to the calculation, the preservation.

It’s almost like a plea. Sometimes, we want something dearly, but self-preservation is more important in the end. The heart has a great capacity for feeling, but it is also very good at keeping the key to those cuffs locked tight away.

Really like the play in this between crime and punishment. We often being the harshest judge on ourselves and our circumstances.

You really manage to tell a full emotional story in this. I think that’s excellent.
