the existence of metaphor

the existence of metaphor

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the existence of metaphor

a sharp divide

from simile

or something like

but it is what it is

on some bleak level

above the trivial

we take things for granted

literally

but figuratively

we don't give a flying

analogy without some purpose

of reality hidden between lines

between words,

between syllables

between our minds

and the page

we try to cross that divide

but it's like a mine field

or like a raging river

that screams in perverse verse

or maybe it is rabbit

hopping away down some stanza

that acts as a warren

but is actually a Zevon

who is a werewolf

in song

and eats rabbits and poets

for breakfast

like the monster he is

protean

changing from simile

to metaphor

to beggar on the street

trying to exchange his words

for food

a sharp divide

from human.

A bit of a poetic explanation of the simile vs metaphor existence is what i read in this one, J. The Like vs Is battle on the poet's page where the battlefield is littered with failed metaphors and the end product is a somewhat de-evolution of the poet as human; he can't sell those metaphors in his poems so he is worse off for it. Your mind was working overtime with this one. It has so many layers to it that i can barely scratch the surface with this review. Its a most intriguing piece!

thank you for your very kind words, Jamila,
j.
Metaphors are magical! I love them. They should be the major currency globally and not gold. Then no poet would want for anything, least of all food. I loved this read.

You're most welcome my friend!
A complex piece Jacob. In it you have introduced me to Zevon and his quite remarkable life, achievements and falls from grace. Knock, Knock, Knocking, never knew who wrote it when I listened to Clapton in awe.
