graduating to nothing

graduating to nothing

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

graduating to nothing

it's a cold day in hell,
and New York and
really in Chicago
the lake wind is Beelzebub
dressed in a white capped gown

our country is freezing
even in hot Florida
where the covid flies in the face of
vulture  skies

they wait,
for the short breaths
the terrified screams of family
the insolent back turning of
the Eagle

can you see him
wings dyed a colorless hue
his span incredulous
shadows make the days colder

we are all frozen to our belief
that people matter,

and he can hardly fly anymore
he is laughing so hard.

You pegged it . . . a cold day in hell . . . did we ever think we'd see our country like this? I'm too jaded to speak about it some days, but you stabbed the knife in the pumpkin (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

poor pumpkin....poor pumpkin!
A shame what the gov't has been doing, not thinking of our well being and our struggles ( that we should not EVER have to be enduring). Thinking too much of themselves and their 'power' is appalling and unfortunately has not stopped as of yet. But we can only dream, but what's the use in that when it's reality we're looking for. Such a strong, but really great write my friend.

I feel a political bent to your words Jacob, where I only know one half of the racers, yet when has ignorance stopped me before? 😀
That eagle will soon have either a quizzical look on his face, with eyebrows raised (do eagles have eyebrows?), thinking to itself "Okay, let's see what this guy does" or will have his eyes hidden under his wings thinking "Please, not again!"
I would laugh too, but I see our options over here and think to myself "Really! This isthe bestof the best is it!?"
For someone who can't even decide if he's agnostic or atheist, I have the prayer beads at the ready just in case 😀

The political nature of this write goes against my thinking. I can not blame our President or our Governor in Florida for all the deaths from Covid-19. Instead, I blame individuals. There are so many who refuse to social distance, who will not wear masks, who go out into public when they have tested positive albeit asymptomatically. However, the deaths are tragic and they have ripped families apart. I don't think this pandemic will end anytime soon. Lydi**

I appreciate your honest response to this piece, Lydi...but I always get that from you, i know.

There is death everywhere and it will visit every street and every corner. An invisible shroud looms large upon us and those who choose to deny its presence are closing themselves to reality. I think in the end only those will remain who had the self-discipline and resilience to acknowledge this devil. For now its just going to remain very very cold and its going to be a while before we see any light and warmth. Thank you.

thank you for your words, Sabrina,

your last two line speak volumes. It is disheartening among other things and your poem highlights that. A strong profound write.

The eagle, I think, stands for the US Government, which has so blatantly bungled its response to the pandemic, focusing mainly on political objectives. The image of the eagle laughing is infuriating, but with states reopening fully when the plague is so far from being controlled, it seems apt. I would say I can't wait until 11/3, but I fear resolution may lie well beyond that date.

Of late, there is a open contemptuousness for anything resembling honesty and fair play that beggars belief; and 'tis not just the 'Eagle,' who should be standing in the dock.

I wonder at this post truth world from time to time, imagine how much better it would be if those that ruled, served us, instead of serving themselves. Then again, I really should have stopped believing in fairies at my age. :))
