I think it is fair to say it is not just America where values appear threadbare and people struggle to understand what they stand for. That great 'big melting pot' is a bit of a minx as the shape of power shifts and old certainties become less than certain.
Yes does the American Flag stand for the values it flew for? I can't help think the flag is at half mast at present. Reminds me of the song American Dream by CSNY a fav of mine.

they were fabulous together...and they were so representative of where our minds and hearts were...and where we wanted to go in the future.
and then "four dead in Ohio" and
we had riots at our school and in town...and school closed three weeks early...
so much chaos, but for a real cause...a real reason.
much like today...the violence against protestors turns protestors violence...and it never ends.

The American flag and all it stands for, appears to have lost meaning to many. All that encompassed the American dream, freedom, liberty, the land of opportunity for all. Is it about to change? That's where I drifted to Jacob, in the very early hours. Not long to election day now :)
