A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

flakes in an anthology

the poetry people
odd crowd

faces diminished in thought
crowns of frowns
serious fingers
move sensually
over alphabet soup
crazy as crackers

words appear in groups
the poetry people
odd crowd

don't get too close
you might catch the inspiration
then ask for a bowl of letters
for your own sating
for your own dating

of verses scribed
of love and heartbreak imbibed
then described

the poetry people
odd crowd
assembles

reciting loud
death to the silent
the soup's cold
as a winter's cloud.

I got an image of a poet looking for inspiration in a bowl of alphabet soup from this one. Whether that was your message I don’t know. But it was a pleasure to read, as it’s a curious image to ponder.

thank you for your words, Saree, and my intended message was whatever you got from the poem.

You know, I spend my evenings when everyone is sleeping reading poetry out loud of the greats, old writing of long dead poets, they’re great company but sometimes they break my heart with their words as I read them out loud but they never disappoint. I think about who they are writing about and how that love gave paper breath. You do that very well j. And I love to read yours out loud too

Thank you for those very kind words, Pat,

Another favourite J. Yes the poetry world is a twilight zone but such life lies within. When you mentioned odd crowd I thought of that narrative song or verse called What’s he doing in there. Can’t think who said it at the moment.

Tom Waits, spooky poetry but excellently done, What’s he doing in there.
Ezra Pound? Dylan Thomas? John Berryman? Allen Ginsberg? How can you call that an odd crowd?

Odd indeed. I often wonder as to folks circumstances and if they come here through boredom, loneliness, perhaps a need, desire to write be it to get things off their chest or a chance to create.
Few know I write( try to) even fewer read my words, mainly because I still lack the confidence of you proper writers :))
Hope you are well Jacob

Birds of a feather flock together. That is us, poetry people. It was a long time before I dared to tell other people in the outside world that I wrote poetry. Really like this poem Jacob. I don't mind being a flake in a bowl of nutty poets.. My favourite breakfast.

But us poetry flakes do band together well, perhaps just because the outsiders know that really we are unworldly, and they are a teenie bit wary of our group madness lol..

Poets do seem to be an odd lot, don't we? Maybe that's why we don't broadcast our proclivities to those who don't rhyme. They'd look at us as though we had two heads ... like somehow we are outside the norm ... and I guess we are, but better to write than not ... in fact I think for most of us we have little choice in the matter.
Words spill out ... sometimes like water from a tap and other times drawn out like pulling a cork from a bottle (now there's another wine reference) for some it seems effortless and yet we still work at perfection seldom reached.

You sir are a poet and I suspect somewhat odd ... but then, it is a defined group of addicts to which you belong.
My name is Ted and I'm a poet.

Well done Jacob, well done.

This is one of the best poems I've read about the poetry people. Such inventive ways to say each thing . . . nicely balanced attitude - slightly making fun of, & also understanding. Love: "over alphabet soup crazy as crackers" . . . "don't get too close you might catch the inspiration then ask for a bowl of letters" (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
