Artist's Rendering, "Zooming into Focus"

Artist's Rendering, "Zooming into Focus"

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Artist's Rendering, "Zooming into Focus"

we've become a Google Earth version

of ourselves

a society of statistics

and reality TV

paparazzi giving us insight into lives

into places we were not meant to go

we are morbid headlines and Inside Edition

commercial breaks and what breaks after that

living through others while we sip wine

and wear out the cushion of the couch

inert figures

falling out of the rhythm of existence

existential beings

in name only,

caught in a space

in between who we could have been

and what we will never be

as the computer screen

and the TV screen

screen us from what we are

until we become remote casualties

with push button minds

pushing remote buttons

and punching lifeless keys

in our Apple minds

not realizing half is eaten

by the worm of complacency

that makes us Still Life paintings

with no life left to speak of.

A bit of gardening can make a difference…
we grow on the Earth while planting in the Earth. We can bloom along with the flowers
and discover the warmth of the Sun and the gentle Rain… we need exercise to grow mentally and spiritually with a healthy body. Of course the Sofa may have a few Potato Spuds embedded in the cushions. truly, Pat

A shame to be not living in the "real life' but instead in the made-up world of pushing buttons and depending on our remotes. A bleak, but and honest picture you portray. Nicely done - take care - Dave

I nod in agreement while reading this dark vision of life. It "resonates with me," as they say. I guess we all look for confirmation here and there that the way we see the world is not "wrong" or crazy. Some people take it as being depressive (they are not entirely wrong) but you can't blame the camera for the ugly picture. I really enjoy reading your poems. They are heavy and ripe with content and are presented masterfully.

Wow Jacob! I am finding it hard to come up with the right words to describe my reaction to this is superb poem packed with all the right punches. You have described the state of things so vividly. Many have fallen into the same patterns and it really worries me. The last paragraph really brings it all home. Simply outstanding!!

Thank you for your really kind review, Dara,

Never understood the appeal of soap operas or celebrity programmes like the Kardashians. That fly on the wall stuff doesn't do anything for me. It is so cringe worthy. A waste of time and space. Rather read a book. Not one to sit infront of the TV. Got a life to live. A very topical write. I like the reference to still life. More like a dead existence to me :))

powerful reply, Chris...and one I do So agree with.
thank you,

Living life through wishy thinking that we could be as uniquely identical and pointless as those whose celebrity is judged in likes and clicks, as we criticise their alleged perfection while vacuuming cheeto dust from ourselves, never realising the lazy boy is what's sitting in the chair and not the chair itself.
I asked alexa if I liked this and she says I do indeed, so five stars Jacob. Speedy delivery and as described. 😊
