Bare Trees

Bare Trees

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Bare Trees

peace, love

oh, crap on the poets

who tried to illuminate

procreate with insane creeds

of gentle whispers

and flowers in the hair of change

slam the voices shut

that don't matter

oh, they began to

then died on the page

of almost.

we were bludgeoned with our own peace signs

raped of the idea of involvement

peace, love

damned are the poets who spoke

in anthologies of the Beat

of a generation marching into the future

with a word

on a palate

to incite

embrace

almost touching each other's heart

before we slammed the voices shut

and the leaves

rushed across a lawn of apathy

blowing in a wind

that apparently

had no answer.

Sometimes the world just destroys the ideologies that are held near and dear...while it's true for every generation this was a nice reflection piece on the movements of the 60s and 70s that offers an interpretation on where we went wrong...greed...commercialism etc.

and those of us who still hold the same ideals are hurt most by what became of that movement.

Words, sometimes ether bound and sometimes heard but nevertheless, aired and as a Poet, to air them is to be heard :) I have always said if poetry reaches one person then it reached out, your poetry is adored by many dear Jacob :) Always such wonderful poignancy in your writes...

Thank you for your very kind words, Ruth,

A thought-provoking poem. It is difficult and iconoclastic. I like this. Good luck.

We of the 1980's were written off as the "me" generation. But we are the children who sang ",We are the world," and "When the children cry."
Where did the fire and the passion go? We were the descendants and the hope of the Beats and the hippies. Your words fill me with heartbreak...

Ah yes the 60’s peacenicks, beatniks and Bob Dylan led us on a peace ride…and writers and poets got on their bandstands and professed peace and love..I remember it well; a great decade now faded into the sunset, but still memories linger….
Well done J.
Best

Dylan was a little before my time, and yet, I'm a fan. Winds blow, sometimes winds of change. Will we ever find that peace and harmony? Perhaps only in our hearts. Sometimes it seems so out of reach. Still - I love the thought of wearing flowers in my hair....Perhaps I was born a little late.... :) Julie

The 60's, along with the beat poets of the 50's, faded away, and many of their ideals never came to fruition. But such is the fate of any generation. There is ever a rising followed by a falling off. Liked the way you worked a nod to Dylan into the last lines.

Such was the spirit of 6 Gallery, San Francisco's home to poetry readings by Ginsberg, McClure, Whales and many others where the many great poets were in the audience ... Kerouac, Cassady, Ferlinghetti and many, many others. At the forefront of Spoken Word Poetry, Beatniks, Performance Readings.
The true foundation of The Beat Generation.
The most influential time of my early inquisitive mind.
Thank you for sharing these words, these thoughts, these memories that give me cause to utilize caps & punctuation!

j. Those days seem so far away now ... that it looks like staring through the wrong end of a telescope.

I'm not sure we made progress on the Peace and Love front but I sure miss the Times. I guess the phycological advantage we have is the ability to remember and write about it.

That and a great soundtrack ... "somethings happenin' here ... what it is ain't exactly clear"

Liked this a lot.
