Vacant Lot

Vacant Lot

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Vacant Lot

philanthropist spreads love

expects no return on investment

runs out of miracles

dies broke

broken

disillusioned

poor of heart

philanthropist keeps love to self

selfless heart turns selfish

wants it paid forward

before he will pay

miracles

are deterred

deferred

the mansion

has broken shutters

weeds overrunning a black yard

there is no love

just a tragic street

untouched by kindness.

"You've left my heart, a vacant lot, I'll fill it with another shot, Yes, I guess, they oughta' name a drink after you." John Prine

This sort of reminded me of the parable of the talents in Matthew 25. A talent was a measure of silver equal to about 6000 drachma, an incredible amount of money. There are so many today equally guilty of hoarding their "talents" rather than investing them. But those of us with children and those who educate know where we'd like to store our wealth; in those young minds and hearts, if we can only gently open those vaults to keep them. A wonderful and thought inspiring read, my friend, I enjoyed every word. F.

Life can be a heartless place that eventually leaves with only dreams about how our lives should have been in an ideal world.
