the supremely cultured

the supremely cultured

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the supremely cultured

send flowers to no address
specifically,
they wilt in transition
as the lives they represent
a mass of spectacular color,

she was not a bulb
to be plied
stood out in defiant stance
bloomed in the only mind that mattered
while her heart, died of an early frost

or a late frost,
or just natural causes
that caused her to consume
the metaphorical gun of despair
she was what they wanted

for a while,
planted in the terrarium
of "normalcy"
of "sweetness"
of compliance to the will

of those who mourn her now
with guilty pleasure
and an array of blossoming smiles
they made her,
they sowed the seeds

that grew her to their perfection
a garden of insanity
where freedom of self
is so deeply rooted
the ground is the only solace

why this heart?
what gains for them in the end?
a corpse of charitable contribution
lies deadly awake
staring at a sky she can't see.

So sad, cultured and demeaned beauty, used until she is a dried out flower. Not sure who this is about but it leaves me mournful.

thank you for your words, Patricia,
j.
These words J conjured up many possibilities. All of them tragic. A heart no longer beats and a despairing soul has been taken.

they sowed the seeds
that grew her to their perfection

A victim of callous and evil behaviour. That's how I read these lines. Trafficking came to mind.

thank you for commenting on this fairly well shunned piece...it appreciates your attention, Chris, read more
This reminded me of Francis Farmer played by Jessica Lange. And how she was misread and went through those terrible mental tortures applied by the mental institutions of that time. All rather sad and everyone involved felt guilty.

thank you, andrew, and yes, Jessica was fabulous in that part...should have gotten the oscar.
So deep, so striking, I especially liked, --- "why this heart?
what gains for them in the end?
a corpse of charitable contribution
lies deadly awake
staring at a sky she can't see." --- I'm a tad slow these days, so I had to read the end twice, then I thought about it some more. --- Thanks, Jacob!
