a fig leaf is scant cover for regret

a fig leaf is scant cover for regret

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

a fig leaf is scant cover for regret

the apple splits into wisdom bites

the limbs of the tree creak

with understanding branches lowering

their sites,

a paradise disturbed

the gates open

a hush permeates the garden

someone saw them leave,

saw a serpent doing cartwheels

celebrating his folly

the crackling stream, gushing with shame

the bites too large to swallow into memory

they are suddenly outside

where the real world is annihilating

grace,

the communion of trust vanishes

with a wafer-thin gust

of misinformation

there is no knowledge to procure

worms destroyed the inside of particulars

nothing to be learned,

to be put to reveal

no reveille

a single “taps”

the gate closes

life becomes a constant broadcast

of shattered peace

the serpent still spinning in his ecstasy

he found the weakness

there is a soft blue hue

where the tree had been

don't try to touch God

or reopen the gate

just tip the chalice

in your favor

and drink until you forget.

me, not a believer in god(s) or the devil (serpent),(you can't have one without the other), it is our humanness/consciousness that allows us to examine our "nature" and to both witness and engage in the ugliness or beauty of the real world... and in spite of religious dogma (of all shades and breeds) as human beings e can change our nature, we are capable of knowing and solving the problems of the world thrown at us and to actually create a world worthy of continuing on this planet..... isn't it ironic how most want to label us all "sinners" but no one dares to consider us "saints" (or capable of being better human beings).... a shame really since if we don't grasp this materialism and dialectic, humanity will extinct itself....

I have missed the poem you write that allow me to adventure into the philosophical realm.... but then I am reading Jacob and his poems always allow for art to meet consciousness and for beauty to emerge...

ps... I gave up my fig leaf a long time ago... it is very liberating to run around naked.... lol

I really appreciate your review, Curt...and yes, very liberating.

Can you imagine how life would be if Adam and Eve did not eat the fruit of the forbidden tree? They were fooled and lied to and, ever since there has been chaos. I am so glad you wrote this, j. It never hurts to go back to the beginning. It's a reminder to us all on what happens when we listen to the Devil and not God. Very good! Thank you! Temp

You are so welcome!
Ah the bible references and I pondered a while J.

Adam and Eve poor things have a heavy burden to carry. We are all sinners.

I like this poem very much because it sent me down several different pathways.

You know what WE say. The ones that we feel good about are rarely the ones that the reader agrees on.. read more
I like this a lot as I often write satirical comic pieces on this subject. Clever word play, like the religious references and how we feel compared to the realities of living life maybe in disbelief. Polished work.
