A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

sense breaking through

a Beat poet

sat on the corner

of 3rd and Rhyme

tired of walking with tired feet

his iambic heels burning pavement

so caught in meter

he, sweating from the stress

he opened his notebook

scribbled some words in haste

words of bad taste

nothing of form

nothing to conform

to how it was

how it should be

but it felt free

when queried on this

he made a fist

spoke out of perfect key

that he was free

a Beat poet

sat on the corner

of 3rd and Rhyme

a biting reciting

of something forbidden

that could no longer stay hidden

his soul.

How is it said, “You have to know the rules before you can break them.” This put me in mind of Ginsberg and his savage energy. Love it I’m really pleased that we found each others work my friend.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Shannon,
j.
I swear you're talking to me sometimes. I quote somebody, not sure who, "poetry is what the poet says it is." Good enough. This poem spoke to me because I can't read an email or sign without checking the meter.

unAUTHorIZED VEhiCLES TOWED at OWNers RISK is out of meter.

I really like this poem Jacob!

Thank you, Bill,

The beat poetry era really did break
through letting the ink flow freely
poetry does evolve in so many ways
ever paving new ways of artful expression

Nice work

Breaking free from form and other stuff. . You can say so much more when you do. Poetry evolves. You start off one way and before you know it, you are somewhere else. You aren't restricted by a corset:) I know how fond you are of the beat poets. They did it their way. Excellent piece J.

I am always somewhere else....thank you, dear Friend.

Long time since I read stuff by - or about - beat poets. I love what this poem is bringing back to me. Thanks, Jacob.

I have an old Poulin anthology from my 1986 grad class, Modern American Poetry....all Beats in it..... read more
The Beats did have their own style, an attempt to break out of what they saw as the conformity of American middle class life. Of them, it is hard to say whose poetry will continue to resonate. Poetry, like everything else, continues to evolve.

yes, it evolves, devolves and then evolves again.
thank you, John,

OK, now you're talking, brother! Free flowing, fun, and serious all at once. The chase for freedom within a difficult medium. Fee and true. Well done.
