Aristocracy's Tears

Aristocracy's Tears

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Aristocracy's Tears

in the castle

of absurdity

the moat lacks gators

shooters break in

the king and queen upended

lives of stone imagining

imagine no more

as the bullets

from another century

pierce the medieval cloak

and dagger stab wounds

hearts of any renaissance

only find peace in death

the vacancy sign hangs heavy

soldiers of intimacy

lying in hordes

on a moribund lawn

conscience a blank withdrawal

God is just an appendage

to those in flux

with their violent natures flaring

the drawbridge is down

the world is down

the news is colloquial

in language and detriment

let's swim with the reptiles

chances of survival

are just as quaint.

Holy S**t!, Jacob,

This piece could easily reach back in time to cause one to smell the smoke and burning cinders of the Russian Bolshevik Revolution, hear the cries of the Romanov family as Czar Nicholas II was murdered along with his wife and children in putting an end to the Russian Monarchy and aristocracy's rule over the Russian People ... Sadly, a cold and often heartless ruler of the People was replaced by an even colder and more heartless and ruthless Ruler of the People and common proletariat: Lenin ... And later, a bloodthirsty Stalin ...

I spent a number of years studying Russian history as a teenager and found it quite intriguing and most interesting ...

And yet, even the land of the free and the home of the brave boasts its own flavor of Aristocracy, Wealth, & Power ...

I do believe that it was Thomas Jefferson who said something to the effect of, "a little revolution is a good thing every now and then ..."

A profoundly powerful and contemplative write, my friend ...

We live in a very different world than the one I was born into 74 years ago! Some changes are for the good, of course (good riddance to colonialism!) but "progress" is often a double-edged sword, cutting away many good things along with the bad! To quote the Bible (and George Harrison!) "All things must pass." Some of those passings are worth grieving over - others are not. A highly interesting poem, as usual, Jacob! You certainly make the reader think!

Is it the heat, the pandemic, or has the world gone mad?

I happen to think the first two combined with imbalance of wealth. The world is ripe for demagogues.
Easy pickin's.

Very interesting poem, J. Makes one ponder.

thank you, Winston,

I wonder Jacob, whether the dinosaurs were having similar quaint thoughts when the meteor fell??? doing the hump de hump, going about their business and perhaps even thinking the could survive the blast... in a recent TV ad about climate change, a raptor asks, "we had a meteor, what's your excuse??"... it's quite possible we won't even get to swim with the reptiles.... colloquial and quaint indeed!!! Great poem Jacob...

I appreciate your insightful and amusing review, Curt...
thank you,

This reading brings to mind what I used to refer to as flowerpot lords of whom there are titles and history but not much else, lacking in other more necessary equippings for living and competing in today's world. Without finance or acumen or training, they end up 'prostituting' their heritage by castle tours, B&Bs, restaurants, museum/tours and becoming venues for all sort of social events. A rape of our communal heritage, by some understanding. We have as a specie gone astray.
