Birthday

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Birthday

bloody signatures
final notes flame
regretful goodbyes
not in person

some wave away the morning
then their smiles come to a sudden halt
in some dream state
a look aghast

the surprise package
arrived through the window
now a day off
a life off

a date slices through heights
burned eyes look up
horrific conclusions
awkward prayers

did God hear the voices
tumbling out of the structures?
was the chorus pleasing to him?
was it really necessary?

sacrifice flies
aren't worth the small benefit
when the stadium collapses
and the fans are removed from their seats

only to see God standing on second base
wondering if he should challenge
to get a second look
as to why

Sept 11th, anniversary of Twin Towers. Where was God then? You brought it all back. The world became much unsafer following that horrifying event.

thank you, Chris,
j.
I usually celebrate my birthday a week late, once I've realised it was my birthday and I'd forgot, again.
Once I get over the shock, I'm happy I'm a year older and think "well, the alternative of not getting a year older sucks" and go find some carrot cake and ribena (blackcurrant squash)
You also stumbled on why young me never sang in church. I had a fear that if I did, a big sandalled foot would come through the roof and squish me for making that awful racket. 😊
And yes, I pray constantly, when my team is playing too 😊
