A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Standard

a beer and

a castoff of leisure

counting seconds until responsibility

a little foam fantasy to top it off

slam the mug down on the table

time to get back to life

the karaoke was a bit too country

and I'm tired of stepping on peanuts

salty shoes

laces untied

misfit giggles

too drunk to stand any more

I love nothing for a living

set my alarm

just to shut it off

and close the blinds

to accentuate

my mood

inertia

is a blind clock

hearing me remain

very, very still.

It’s all routine for some. Routine! Routine! Living the mundane. No wonder we want to switch off.

"Inertia is a blind clock, hearing me remain very, very still."
Has someone had some time off work and is due back imminently perchance?
Or just a really good weekend? 😊

Jacob, you have a way of writing what you feel, and what others (including me) often feel, that goes right to the heart of a thing! You've a fan in me,

I love the lines "set my alarm/just to shut it off. And the karaoke mention sent me reeling. Quick story:
I had a good friend (now deceased) whose son sang country Karaoke, and my friend pestered me to go see his son because he was "so good". I went. He is pretty good. We all sat together and the kid seemed nice as he could be.
A few months later my friend called to tell me his son was in prison: for murder. Life sentence. Seems he was one of three who got drunk and raped a woman and tossed her off a bridge.
And I sat right next to him one time. That is chilling in retrospect.
