A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

love actually

curling around ribs

sneaking under endless bone

the scalpel finds heart

Doesn't it just? This is a neat, concise summation of what love is all about. Heartache, pain, blood. Wounds that aren't always visible. That's what I took from it, anyway. That's the genius of poetry. We bring to it and we take away from it based on our experiences. Well done!

You are welcome Jacob.
Love does find its way through to our hearts....and it is a good thing that it does. Lydi**

I enjoyed this. It reminded me of Emily's words,
"Surgeons must be very careful
When they take the knife!
Underneath their fine incisions
Stirs the Culprit - Life!" Emily Dickinson

The first cut is always the deepest so they say. Maybe a another donation of a spare rib will do the recipient better in a newer model. Yes love can embrace the heart and or leave cuts. A heart is like a whale, it bears the visible scars from conflicts.

yes, a whale does that....such gentle creatures....hate to see scarred ones.

Oh yes. Doesn’t the scalpel find the heart? Fabulous piece of brevity and wonderful metaphor J. Felt this one. No pain relief, no anaesthetist.

you get it...thanks, Chris.
"the scalpel finds heart" - indeed...when it comes to love, we are "patients etherized upon the table" (Eliot) and the "surgeon" does with us as she pleases. your metaphor also suggests a kind of cold, surgical precision that is quite antithetical to what we normally like to imagine love is like. great, evocative write - as usual.

Wonderfully written and the line- "the scalpel finds the heart" feels like a story or poem in it's own. Nice one !

The words cut just as sharp. Love finds a way to deal the blows.

I like your response better than the poem itself.
