conjunctions push their way into starting sentences

poetry has many of them

starting lines

thank God we use fishing line

rather than fishing sentences

 

the fish would all be offended

if we cast with "ands" or "buts"

 

And they would take one look and swim away.

But another conjunction would just worm its way

 

in to hook us

and send us reeling

with disgust.

So, definitely, red ink is not a stop sign.

A delight to read J. I wonder how lenient you were amongst your students. I think you would have encouraged freedom of expression although in the times you were teaching those ideals may not have been the curriculum and even you had to go with the flow set out. Discipline seemed to be the attitude in all fields back then when I went to school. A most entertaining read J.

I am still teaching...and yes, grammar matters to the extent that we can still read what is written...I point out grammaticals...but that does not erase the good ideas...

I think I may have offended many with my use of conjunctions. I love them, they are joining words and make reading more eloquent. I have even committed the sin of starting a sentence with one. Shock horror. Your sense of humour is all over this piece dear j.

Often, perfect sentences begin with "and" or "but."

I actually teach my students to do that once in awhile for effect...not to overdo starting with a conjunction...but that it adds flare when used sparingly.
