the black cat the red bird and the flower

the black cat the red bird and the flower

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the black cat the red bird

and the flower

a lovely advantage

a cat in the window

stares at the Cardinal

just outside nipping

at scraps

the seeds of nature's

allies

who might immediately

become mortal enemies

but for the glass between them

if only a window

could stop

another war

we might shut it

and then watch

the cease fire bloom

from the house next door.

Sometimes the cat wins but he will never know the freedom of flight. The cat wants to eat. The bird wants to live. But if the cat is well fed and distracted both parties should profit. And that strategy might suffice except for the fact that cats are innate predators and live for the hunt, chase and kill. It is their primary instinct. You cannot kill the instinct without killing the cat anymore than weapons could kill an ideology. The first time the window opens the cat will seize his window of opportunity. Because it is the nature of the cat.

If only that window being shut would fix it. Another thought-provoking write. ~Jim

Gut-wrenching lines: beautiful and tragic at the same time.
Free will is a window that can open the gates of heaven or that of hell.
This is also the beauty and the tragedy of the human condition.
