Charade

Charade

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Charade

a poetic dog

wandered into my yard

with his A.I. verse

to which I am averse

I threw stones at him to shoo him away

then went back to my Poulin Anthology

to read the cool cats from the fifties and sixties

the Beats who wrote "Howl"

and growled with realism

their poetry was a vein running towards their heart

                                                   carrying blue blood

an artery spilling away with ironic thunder

as a maze to amaze

no flattery needed to tell them they were great

they just wrote and barked to anyone

who would listen

Now the fake poets

should be made to eat their "Fresh Pet"

real food

real poetry

that is invited into our yard

to retrieve some of the fresh community

of artists who did their own thing

and hopefully,

rid current poetry

of the kibbles and bits of

written preservatives.

He who has tasted the old wine doesn't, straightway, desire the new. I 'll always be a fan of the older verse and the classical poets. I love reading Donne, for example. His was such an interesting and brilliant mind and a bit bawdy at times considering his position in the church. I love digging into the interesting lives of people like Caravaggio, Van Gogh and Donne. I never was much of a fan of the beat poets. But I think Ginsberg was probably the best of them. I dated a gal who thought Rod McKuen was the cat's meow. I thought most of his stuff was sentimental mush with an esoteric feel with phrases like "listen to the warm". Sort of surreal but then so was gal I dated. :) In the end, I guess it's all a matter of personal taste. Or as McKuen might say, "my dog likes apples but he'll eat oranges too".

As long as the poetry is not written by A.I., all kinds are worth a look.

AI is writing poetry now? What a strange time we live in.
I remember when the microwave first came out. We were all thrilled with how much easier it would make our lives. Now we eat ultra processed foods that are really bad for us. Will AI be the same? Technology has good and bad, like everything in life, but it is humans that must decide how to use it. At what point do we realize we are so isolated and divided that we reject technology to become human again? Very well written and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing your writing.

A.I. poetry, Processed. So true. Thank you for your insightful review, Lisa.

Your words come as a powerful jolt in this poem, to those who think AI can be a substitute for true feelings bled on paper. You're such a crusader for this cause. I think I'm seeing less AI poets here now and that's such a relief. Who wants to chew on all that plastic?

Plastic doesn't digest worth a damn, either.
Thank you, Divya,

Hi J., I'm zipping around doing reviews I often forget to do that.
I was worried you might not like me researching my poems, like God, Bukowski, and Me.
I do research via AI to get facts like, was Bukowski any religion? No, he was atheist.
Of course, if we write our poetry with AI it's not us, but AI.
My poetry is so back-woodsy because I'm a country girl so no danger there, lol.
Awesome write!

That could very well be, Eternity.
One of the things I've loved about poetry for so long is that even though some of it isn't considered 'good', it still came from someone feeling something so deeply that they had to write about it. It makes me so sad when I realize something I'm reading was generated by AI. Not only does it steal and sterilize real writers' work, it steals the human right to creation. The process of creating art is what truly heals us, not the finished work.
Thanks, Jacob, another great piece.

Bad poetry is still art, A.I. generated poetry is just a bunch of words with no feeling.

Hear hear, says I!
Have noticed a few writers who sound like they are trying to pass off AI as their own work here. Can usually tell by the overuse of unusual words and phrasing, as well as the fact that said writers are known not to be so grammatically correct... something I have nivir had a problimm with! 😃
AI may be able to concoct the basic premise of poetry, but will never be able to create a howl or growl with realism because they may know what a soul is but do not possess one.
Maybe the afterlife will weed them out because I've heard tell you need a soul to gain entry into heaven...as well as being a good boy or girl, just like Santa at Christmas! 😃
