the morning after a day that never existed

the morning after a day that never existed

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the morning after a day that never existed

I'm a rich man's storm drain

poor water gushing

unattainable green

flooding my envious intellect

with angry assertions

why am I the beggar

swimming backwards

through the rusting metal

of life, wasting away

slowly

my poems barely

keeping their themes

above water

the stench of rancid metaphor

fills the page with incessant

despair

While others drink a toast

to those they step on

and never hear us

shattering the glasses

they dispose of

after gargling with our tears.

Why is it we, the salt of the earth, must look up to tie our shoes, while those we enrich stomp all over us as though we are nothing but waste. But then, this system we live under was never meant for us. Their high and mighty words are a sham, as this is the land of the greed and home of the grave. Remember too, the last thing to come out of Pandora's box was HOPE. And HOPE is a dangerous thing. HOPE that we can and must end this long nightmare. Funny how a song from 2 centuries ago, "we have been naught, we shall be all", still strikes fear in their rule. We should sing it more.

That, sir, says it all - and, more than likely essential in these messy, murky days. You create another world with your metaphors, jacob, sir.

'gargling with our tears' - how very true in some cases,
