In 1961, Bunny Mellon redesigned the Rose Garden during the Kennedy Administration. Katherine Crabapples, Magnolia * soulangeana, boarded by diamond sapped hedges of thyme, were planted and in spring, offered a sweet rush of white/green blossoms and fragrance. If only gardens could tell us about the glory of the moment. But throughout their long history, flowers have kept, quite even as they've watched the dying of those hands that planted them. Men stand behind rostrums and pontificate. In contrast, flowers lay in their beds of soil as witnesses to everything, but with nothing to say. It's all so unfair.

It really is unfair...so unfair...Roses signify love and peace. Not the current Rose Garden.

I did not know about Bunny Mellon...thank you for that, dana, we learn something new everyday.

He’s smelling of roses right now for his efforts today. Plenty of world wide publicity. Maybe the rest of the garden stinks? What say you j?
