A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

an author outdated

I am the forbidden chapter

of the life you never finished

just a few more pages

could have given us the closure

we needed to move on

but you dog-eared a page

and left the book to gather dust

the cover art fading

like a photo just out of focus

years ago taken in the year of us

I wanted to keep writing

but the publisher upstairs

gave me a deadline

I couldn't heed

the indeterminate ending

I didn't need

so now the sequel

is a stack of confusion

page one lies in the typewriter

pinned to the carriage

that  has broken wheels

from a broken heart.

This made me sad. It all ends. We struggle to extend the deadlines. Nowadays, I'm just grateful to go on.

I hear ya, Sapphus. I, too, am grateful to go on.
thanks for the read and comment,
j.
One part of this that really stands out is "but you dog-eared a page and left the book to gather dust". Wow. I still write to the one who left my book on the shelf, even if she doesn't read it ... because I somehow must. Anyhow, excellent work. ~Jim

I bet she quietly does read it.
Thanks, Jim.
