Taps

Taps

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Taps

the woodpeckers play their tunes

Knock knock knocking on Heaven's Door

their red heads pounding wood

drilling into political madness

and we shut our ears

they leave holes

where minds should matter

listen

their beaks wear down

they slow

the problems are still imminent

but no one is listening

to the lyrics

the birds are challenging us

Nature has wisdom

but in our usual ignorant fashion

we just hear noise

then a fluttering of

frustration

as they fly off

the door closes

and the bugle

plays Taps

on our souls.

We live in a mad world with mad leaders. Seems to be far more sensible to listen to our avian friends and avoid the politics altogether. I have more faith in birds than politicians, plus I like birds they don’t lie to you. Just my thoughts on a topic which gives so many of us grief dear j.

I can almost feel the lost faith in humanity in this piece. I never was good at feeling sorry for anyone and least of all, myself. I get up at 6 am because a puppy needs her walk. Only a lack of purpose breeds despair but purpose desires and appreciates action and work more than words. We change what we can for what we believe is good and we fight the good fight daily, not only for ourselves but for future generations of children and grandchildren. It is incumbent upon us to make sound choices and decisions in that respect. For good to triumph over evil there must be a conflict. But I believe good will triumph.

Sure hope we will triumph...thanks, Fabian.

Yes, the political madness seems to go on and on. Maybe the woodpeckers do know something we don't. If one of them could tell us how to employ the 25th amendment, I'd vote for him.

That makes two of us, John.

It is a sad state of affairs, Jacob. As I read your poem, several thoughts came to my mind. One is that it might be a bit premature for that bugle call, as it seems millions of people have become politically active once again, especially our young people. They do not want to live in a fascist America. What scares me is that most of these awakened people still see America as the "shining light on the hill", America, while flawed, is still a nation for "good" in the world. They do not as yet understand that what we see today is the outcome of a system that has grown from the seeds and soil of the "American Dream". And, that to end this madness and horror, we need a whole new system. When this understanding becomes alive and leading these millions, we will play the music of joy and dance on the grave of this system. Hopefully, this will come soon cause those Woodpeckers need a home, and we humans are very close to extincting ourselves and much of life on this planet, if we don't act soon. Then there will be no one who will play "Taps" for our world or for us.

Your poetry always resonates with me, Jacob. Thank you for your words and wisdom.

The woodpeckers might play taps for us.
Thank you for your insightful review, Curt.

Woodpeckers are lovely critters drilling without harm while wordly superpowers kill to drill and steal oil wells ah.
That's what this great metaphoric poem speaks to me. Kudos!!

Plz also read and comment my newest poem too
