Discriminate

Discriminate

A Poem by Barbara Walker

I could hit home runs, throw hard and fast

and longed to wear the uniform of Little league,

but when I asked, they said, "No."

I had good grades in school

and longed to be on Safety Patrol,

but when I asked, they said, "No."

I longed to make things out of wood

and needed tools,

but when I asked, they said, No."

I loved hiking and climbing mountainsides

and needed boots,

but when I asked, they said, "No".

Each and every time they said, "No",

they crushed the capable, yearning spirit within me,

as they said, "You can't because you're a girl"!

I like this. It's sweet and simple and to the point, and conveys very nice imagery. Only one suggestion though....I would change the line - Later, I will immerse my nose in their clean scent. You've given us two distinct aromas in the first line so the reader is already smelling them....grass and fresh clothes. So maybe get rid of "later" and "will." Also, I didn't like curtains in the second line...why not say sheets or ghosts or something more interesting. Great job overall though. I really like this. Thanks for sharing.

I would gladdly get out the duct tape and cover the mouths of mom's and dad's who would say things like this to their daughters these days!
The youth of today need be free to explore all avenues of possibility, and skills. The concept of gender seperation is old and out dated and needs to be completely expunged from society!
Great Write!
I understood where you came from on this, the meaning was clear. I could feel the crushing weight that those words would have made you feel!

oh to of an age when i can remember being told no-because you are a girl...and now look how far our daughters and granddaughters have come. i raised my daughter to never accept that as a valid reason for not doing something. thank you for giving voice to those of us who experienced that turn down. you did it without whining and weeping "woe is me" . well done.

Society teaches separation of the sexes at way too young of an age. Simple chores, as safety patrol, instills that women should never be police officers. A subliminal message, in some sort, which I don't agree with. Your words stand up for women, show discrimination and I appreciate your courage in this piece.

This is such an olden day attitude, and so wrong,, girls can do anything, and I know that,, well written, well vented. I think sometimes guys are afraid of girls because they do have a power we don't...
Nice write
