Fat bottomed girlsA Story by FawnCant fat be good too? The word fat carries a negative connotation-Written from this prompt.
When the word “fat” is used as an adjective to describe a person, immediately an image of someone squeezed into too tight, buttock hugging, polyester pants that cling to every dimple springs to mind. I envision them with enormous, thunder thighs bounding down the office aisles at work, while in their wake, everyone’s cubicle walls shake and sway, bric-a-brac falling from shelves. The pants are, of course, the requisite black because everyone knows black is slimming.
Freddy Mercury once sang, “Fat- bottomed girls they make the rockin’ world go ‘round”. Freddy Mercury’s personal experience with “fat-bottomed girls” is questionable, but wouldn’t it be great if everyone shared his point of view of women with a little “junk in the trunk”? As a person who likes to feed her emotions, I would be free to be over-wrought and anguished, or jubilant and celebratory whenever the mood struck without fear of retribution from the cellulite god.
The word “fat” carries a negative connotation in our society and my unflattering imagery may be more fact than fiction. In our nation, built on a foundation of fast food enterprises, 62% of American adults are considered overweight, as well as, 34% of American children. For the first time ever, today’s generation of children will not live longer than their parents did. They will die pre-maturely of obesity related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. So, yes, fat is negative. Its negativity reaches well beyond superficial ideals. It’s not only unattractive, it’s unhealthy.
Can’t “fat” be good too? If you look up the definition of fat, you will find 15 adjectives, 9 nouns, 1 verb, and 5 idioms. Surprisingly, not all of them are negative. For example, “fat” as an adjective can mean, “having too much flabby tissue; corpulent; obese” OR it can mean, “wealthy, prosperous; rich”. Wealthy? Prosperous? Rich? That’s the kind of “fat”, I’d like to have!
So the next time you pull up to the drive-thru order a healthy dose of fat.
“Thank you for coming to United Commerce and Trust. How may I help you?”
“I’d like to order a great big, juicy portfolio loaded with pre-tax investments and dripping with high interest yields. I’d also like a side of mutual funds, annuities, stocks, bonds, and certificates of deposit.”
“Would you like to super-size that?”
Ah…if only it were that easy.
See you at the gym!
