Truck to Nowhere

Truck to Nowhere

A Poem by Catherine

Got into the backseat of your truck just for you to have no destination,

no luck

nor any language that could name what was between us now.

The tension holds high but so is my tolerance for your words.

I close my eyes and let you break through the haze.

Part of me wishing I was what was breaking.

I really really wish I didn’t.

And I stay quiet,

Pretending you didn’t leave the map behind.

Pretending this is all fine.

Eyeing me in your rear view mirror I smile wide and grim -

Teasing my worry and stillness.

Folded like meat in the backseat,

Organs intertwined with fear.

I never wanted to be a lamb but I never wanted to be a wolf though either.

I hope the roads remember where you were meant to go.

 And that maybe something

 or someone

    knows my destination too.

"Part of me wishing I was what was breaking."
This line is so strong. When I finished reading, I went back to reread it and pause for a while to mull it over. Thank you.

I like the metaphor here...so much more than what appears on the surface here.
I related...once I had no real destination and the person I was with just had to get out of the truck.
I understand that now.
