chair

chair

A Poem by Everett Dulin
"

hanging

"
i think its about over
all i can do
stare at the wall
light blue paint
over spray splatter
staring at the wall,
blurred now

my head caught
at ceiling fan level
soft-cream crown rims
and popcorn-ceiling finish labels
plaster constellations as witness
swinging staring at the wall

the ocean is wide and blue
and my solitary chambers the same
ceiling level treading
but the chair has still fallen

Features like repetition of staring at the wall, the paint, the texture, and the ceiling suggest a kind of numbness—perhaps feeling trapped, detached, or stuck in a cycle of thought. The symbolism of the ocean evokes vastness, solitude, and maybe even longing for escape. And the fallen chair is particularly striking—it introduces a sense of finality, an acknowledgment that something has come to an end, yet the speaker remains suspended in contemplation; a quietly beautiful yet stirring piece.
