body.

body.

A Poem by Everett Dulin

i remember you had a body
you had arms and legs
bruises under fingernails
i remember i lost my grip

and a voice
that grasped through foggy chords
i remember your hands
i remember you had words

my wired indifference had left us a stranger
and processing tones could never make the difference
i had a voice once too, and arms, and legs, and et- cetera
i remember my grip, and the bruises above my knuckles

those sour chords, that i sang myself
monotoned dissonances i memorized
the body i had imagined, bruised and damaged
i remember you had hands, and purple fingernails

i remember there was a boy
who lost his grip, who heard the raven's fit
and when they rebuilt him
it was the only note in tune

Even though I know that your poems will always hit me like a punch in the face, I still fall into this trap and get surprised every time. Your endings are always so so strong, you know how to do this.
