We Gain Ground

We Gain Ground

A Poem by Kenneth The Poet

we gain ground

the same ground normally

the same stride

the same spread

maybe in three

maybe in sixes

maybe in twos

maybe in fours

maybe in eights

maybe in sixteens

sometimes in fives

sometimes in tens

rarely in twenties

rarely in sixties

almost never in sevens

almost never in nines

almost never in elevens

almost never in thirteens

the spread by the center is the same

the stride at the edge is the same

and the smaller the spread

and the smaller the stride

the more steps are taken back to the inception

the ground is gained and the regained the next go-round

and the attitudes are supposed to be merry

but if circular arguments are unacceptable,

then why should circular actions be?

fighting nature is fighting city hall,

the players change but the structure remains so
