Open DoorA Poem by Paul D. AronsonHere I am trying to channel my inner E.A. Poe."Open Door" I thought I had closed the doorBut you came back in anywayShuffling the feet on the linoleumStruggling with words to sayAfter the worst argumentI thought you were gone for goodGuess I should have crossed myselfOr maybe knocked on wood I was surprised I must admitBy the empty look in your eyesYour hair like strands of seaweedCondemning me for my liesYou opened your mouth to speakI waited for you to explainBut all that came out was a haloOf flies born of your pain I screamed and tried to get awayBut there was nowhere to hideFrom the vengeance of your gazeMy thrice begotten brideAnd as your fingers wrapped aroundMy throat and squeezed my life awayI was wrong to think I had closed the doorTo your murder and your grave
