I'm not following every twist & turn, but I love your scalding commentary, exemplified by your depiction of Jesus being befuddled by how horribly his simple message of love has been twisted, most often by those who purport to be spreading his word. I love how you bring all the religions into this, so that even as you use this brilliant "Jesus" scenario, I read your message in its entirety as being similar for whatever deity one worships (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

The brilliant thing about the prophets is that they don't abandon their cause when the rest of us twist the message into something it was never meant to be. What I like about your poem is that it gets to the heart of how we abandon compassion in the race to maintain supremacy in religion. How much evil has been done in the name of good. If a group of people has to be beaten and oppressed to make them believe in a god (or even one person), chances are the connection to deities will be superficial and fear driven.
When humans finally grow to understand this, maybe the world will experience something like peace. But, the more likely scenario is that we will just bury ourselves with our callousness and carelessness and the peace that finally reigns on earth will be human free.
You're always great at these kinds of poems, Gram. The depth of feeling that you imbue the words with and the sense of history streaming through. Christ said we should love one another. And your poem stands as a great reminder of the simplicity of that message for me. The complexity of religion being something of our own creation. And another tool misused for the purpose of power. Great poetry.

Now, if all those great religions were in the same room and I then walked in, proclaiming I hated religion, I just bet I would be the leper in the room.

Jeesus Gram you write the most brilliant bollocks. My sort of invective, my sort of abrasive, sarcastic, ascorbic, acidic, critical diatribe. Manful and bitter and definately food for the butcher.
