Red with Cold

Red with Cold

A Poem by Rachel DeHart

my hands are red with cold

knuckles aching from me refusing to

                stop typing and maybe attempt

                                something close to [maybe] sleep.

and with the chill

that is crisscrossing its way into my bones

                I remember the warmth behind

your hug. My glasses fogging from the heat radiating

from your “oh so punk” 3 dollar jacket

[that I by the way love[d]]

and your arms warm around my waist.

My toes on tip, trying to stay close, but

not fall in.

what a lost fight that became.

but now with some serious cold

finding its way deep into my

joints. I want you here. Which,

even in my head sounds silly.

cause who am I to you?

Let alone, how did you crawl under

                my skin, so efficiently?

either way,

I’m oddly still counting down the days.

I like the dream state injected with moments of pure clarity, I'm not sure whether it's intended but the thought process and the moment you've been through comes across perfectly.

'what a lost fight that became' and 'so efficiently' are my examples of sudden awareness for me! :)

God, I hate that feeling. When your rational mind is telling you that you're being oh so silly, but your hopelessly romantic side is encouraging you to hold on.

I particularly love the line "My toes on tip, trying to stay close, but
not fall in."

Such a fine line.

soon enough.
we'll both warm our hands at a figurative fire.
preferably with lots of coffee as well.

You write with such power, it's wonderful.
I can relate to this poem, there are many times were I felt like I too was falling.

Wonderful. I've been there, felt that feeling. Falling when you don't want to fall, freezing when all you want is the warmth of that person.
Great write!

Best,
Lee
