Chapter Twelve

When everyone finally went back to their seats, Cathy flopped down on the desk, laughing.
"Blimey - much longer in the middle of that crowd and I'd have suffocated! I wouldn't have survived to see the end result of the thing I started!"
Everyone laughed. Cathy turned round and flashed a grin at everyone.
After Art, at break, we went back to the tuck shop to get some more food. The snow was still coming down. There was no sign of Mewbellinne anywhere.
Our next lesson was English, but when we got to the classroom, there was a note stuck on the door saying that we all had to meet in the library, as we were going to be working in there for that lesson.
"We'll take that letter up at lunchtime." said Cathy, as we trudged through the snow to the library. "We'll have to take it up to Mr Mewan - when Mr Thomson got back from taking that report he said that Mrs Mewberick had gone home ill."
Mr Mewan is our Head of Year and is young and very very gorgeous!
"Oooh - we're all coming with you then!" Purbelle laughed.
English was pretty boring - we just had to sit at tables and read through the booklets we had been given for our GCSE exam. The booklets were full of poems, short stories and articles and we would be studying them throughout the year and we would have to answer questions on them in our exam. Basically that was just a great lesson for whispering.
Our English teacher, Mrs Purralin, is old and batty, and I swear she can't see very well. She would sit in the library at a table of her own, reading, and she would look up occasionally to see if we were working, and sometimes she would look straight at us all whispering and not seem to actually see us at all! That cracks me up.
Mewbellinne didn't show up at all. We began to wonder if she had gone home.
"Well I didn't see a Rolls Royce pull up with a chauffeur to load her bag in, so I'm guessing she didn't." Tibbicca whispered to me. Purla heard her and started giggling. Mrs Purralin looked up at the noise and glared over at Purbelle and Mewlarka, who she thought was making the noise.
"Ssshhh!" she said, clapping her finger to her lip.
Purbelle and Mewlarka looked at each other and then at Mrs Purralin.
"We never spoke a word!" Purbelle said indignantly.
Purla and I were dying laughing silently at our desk.
After English, we ate our lunch out in the snow, as usual, then Cathy insisted we went and re-touched our make-up before we went to see Mr Mewan.
We left the toilets in a giggling crowd. We had thought it would just be us four going up, but we seemed to have acquired Tibbicca, Purla, Purbelle, Mewlarka, the Johnson sisters, and Alimew.
We went into the main building and up to the offices.
Cathy went over to Mr Mewan's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" his youthful voice called.
"Wait here." Cathy said to us all. She pushed open the door, and, of course, not taking any notice of her, we all crowded in behind her and almost tripped her up.
"I've......" she began, then nearly fell over as Alimew pushed in. We all stifled giggles. Mr Mewan looked amused.
He was really handsome. He was tanned, with short brown hair gelled into a neat-but-messy style, and gorgeous bright blue eyes. He had a shirt and tie on but the tie was pulled undone and he had his collar open.
Cathy turned and looked at us all then turned away again with such a comical look on her face that even Mr Mewan laughed. She stepped forward, put her bag down and rearranged her hair, then spoke again.
"I've got a letter here from all of us - it's a complaint about another pupil in our class."
"OK." Mr Mewan took it from Cathy. "Thanks. And your name is........"
"Cathy Mewphon." Cathy said, pushing a strand of hair off her face with a perfectly French manicured nail. Mr Mewan was watching her out of the corner of his eye even though he was reading the letter.
"Ok - I'll get Mrs Mewberick to deal with this right away." he said. "She's gone home but I'll ring her at home and see what we can do."
"Thank you very much." Cathy said in a professional voice.
With that, we all turned and left. Cathy glanced back at Mr Mewan as we went and he smiled at her.
"Oh my God oh my God oh my God!" Cathy said as we went down the stairs. "I'm in there!"
"Oh rubbish!" laughed Purbelle. "He's that kind of bloke that eyes up all the pretty female pupils! Must be paradise for him working here - a young gorgeous guy like him!"
"Come on - let's get to Geography." Mewlarka said.
We got into the Humanities block and were just walking along to our Geography classroom when Cathy stopped.
"Damn it." she said, then turned round and ran out of the door!
"Where are you going?" I yelled after her.
"Tell Mrs Fisher I'll be there in a minute!" she called. The door shut. We all stood and looked at each other.
  Tibbicca shrugged and laughed.
We all filed into Geography. Mrs Fisher was there with all our work, ready to give it out so we could carry on with our projects.
"Cathy said she'll be here with a minute." I said, as we went to sit down.
"I'll believe that when I see it." Mrs Fisher smiled, shoving my work at me. "It's always one of you four that disrupts the class."
Mrs Fisher is quite witty when she's in a good mood. And she usually is after she's had her lunch.
The agenda that lesson was to get on with our work - we could go to the library, stay in the classroom, go to the computer suite, whatever we wanted. We decided to go out into the social area outside our classroom and work out there - the floor is big so we could spread out all our work. Tibbicca, Purla,
Purbelle, Mewlarka and the Johnson sisters came out with us.
"Go on then." Mrs Fisher said. "But behave."
"You should be glad we're not wandering off, Miss!" Tab laughed, as we picked up all our things and went out of the door.
  Cathy was ages.
"Where the hell is Ca......" Purla began, when all of a sudden, the door opened and Cathy came into the social area.
"Where the hell have you been?" I said, sitting up. We were all lying on the floor on our stomachs, drawing maps.
"I left my bag in Mr Mewan's office." Cathy smiled wickedly, then sauntered off to the classroom to dump her bag and get her work.
We all looked at each other.
Cathy was back in a few seconds, her face glowing.
"You little devil." Tibbick Johnson murmured as Cathy lay down with us.
"What?" Cathy said innocently, a big grin on her face as she got her pen out. "I left my bag, that's all!"
"So explain something to me - I seem to be a bit slow." Tibbick said, propping herself up on both elbows and looking right at Cathy. "Why has it taken you twenty minutes to fetch it?"
"Wow - did it take that long?"
If Cathy's eyes got any wider they would pop out, I thought to myself.
"Oh, come on!" I laughed. "What happened up there?"
"OK, OK." Cathy sat up and we all gathered round. "I went back up and knocked on the door, and he said come in, so I peeped round and apologised and said that I'd left my bag. He said it was OK, so I stepped in and picked it up, then he said was I in a rush, and could I stay for a few minutes, because there was something he wanted to talk to me about."
"Oh my God!" Tibbick grinned. "Go on!"
"Well, I pushed the door to, and went over to the desk, and he said sit down, so I did, and then he came over to me and kissed me!"
"Oh!" Mewlarka shrieked. "What - just like that?"
"Well we looked at each other for a few seconds, then we kind-of edged nearer to each other, then we just kissed!" Cathy said, brushing her hair away from her face in excitement.
"Oh my God!" Purbelle laughed, clapping her paw over her mouth. "Cath - I can't believe you got off with a teacher!"
"I know!" Cathy said, clapping her paws together. "I can hardly believe it myself!"
"I hope you lot are working!" Mrs Fisher called from round the classroom door.
"Yes Miss!" Cathy called back, and with that, we all lay back down and carried on drawing our maps.

***

Walking home that afternoon, Tab and I were still in a kind-of shock. Cathy had gone up to see Mr Mewan again before we left to go home, and Mewla, Tab and I had been left sitting outside, waiting. Purbelle, Tibbicca, Purla and Mewlarka had joined us soon after, and we had all had a snowball fight.
Half an hour after that, Cathy appeared, a huge grin on her face.
"If anyone catches you you'll be in such trouble." Tab said, as we walked through the thick snow.
"No-one's going to catch us." Cathy said confidently.
"How old is he again?" Mewla asked.
"25." said Cathy. "25, single and totally gorgeous. And mine."
"Cath, he's probably got a girlfriend." I said. "He's just playing about with you at school."
"He hasn't. He told me. He broke up with his last girlfriend a month or so ago. He said he's seen me round school a few times and he thought how gorgeous I was."
  "God I can't believe it." I said.
"I know! fantastic, isn't it!" Cathy grabbed my paws and swung me round in the snow. "Wonder what Mewbellinne would think of that! Coming in here and thinking she's prettier and better than everyone! Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah!"
"Well she's not going to find out, is she!" I said firmly. "Because if she does, she'll use it to make serious trouble for you - you'll get expelled and Mr Mewan will get the sack! It isn't worth it Cath - we're in our last year! I know it's tempting to rub her nose in it but for your own sake, don't! Mewbellinne is just waiting to get you in trouble after the way you were on at her today and this would be just perfect for her!"
"Oooh, alright Mum!" Cathy laughed, prancing around.
