Year 9 Sisters - A Mel, Tab, Mewla & Cathy story

Chapter Six

Cathy was on the doorstep punctually at ten past eight. Mewla and I were still eating our breakfast. It didn't take us long though, to finish our fried eggs and bacon, get dressed and grab our bags and folders, and by twenty-past eight we were waiting outside Tab's house while Tom laughed at Tab for not being ready. Francis and Mewfal came along to call for Tom and we all walked to school in a big group, laughing and chatting.
When we got to school all the others were in the tutor-room, even the boys, who didn't seem bothered about football in the snow that morning. Miss Mewola came in soon afterwards, with a small yellow plastic bag in her paw.
"Morning!" she took off her coat and sat down. "Quieten down now - I've got something important to say."
"What is it, Miss?" Cathy asked. We wondered if she had news about the 'break-in'.
"Well, yesterday afternoon, after school, someone went along to the nurse's office and left a bag on her desk with a note." Miss Mewola said. "The nurse wasn't in the room at the time so she had no idea who had left it. But the note just said 'sorry' and in the bag was a certain amount of jewellery that I believe want for a walk yesterday."
There was a general cry of amazement and happiness as everyone who had lost their jewellery stood up.
"So here it is." Miss Mewola emptied the bag onto her desk. "Come and claim your things."
Everyone went up to Miss Mewola's desk and sorted through the items.
"So we have no idea who it was?" Cathy said.
"No, more's the pity." Miss Mewola said. "A completely anonymous return."
"Seems a bit pointless to nick stuff then return it." Cathy said. "And someone might've seen them going into the office, so they ran the risk of it being not-so-anonymous after all."
"Maybe that's why they went in after school had finished - when most of you were going home." Miss Mewola said.
"But why give it back at all?" Purla mused.
"Maybe they felt guilty." grinned Tibbicca.
There was much discussion about our jewellery during the rest of registration and on the way to Physics. None of us could work out why on earth whoever stole it would return it the same day.
Mewlarka seemed happy enough after yesterday's outbursts. She and Purbelle chattered happily together and sat together as usual at their bench in the Physics lab. Before Mr Hillmew arrived, Mewlarka actually came over to us all and apologised for being so horrible. We all said it was ok, apart from Cathy, but seeing the expression on her face, I had to give her a swift kick under the bench before she had time to say something along the lines of how Mewlarka should stop taking out her aggression on her friends.
"Right - settle down now!" Mr Hillmew came in with piles of papers and a briefcase. "Lots to do!"
  Everyone was quiet.
