What If

What If

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I was so used to getting my heart broken

I never imagined it the other way

I didn't mean to wound your ego

I really didn't want to make you sad

I know it's no excuse but

I was taken off guard

I wasn't expecting it

And you were just so damn cute

I just stood there dumbfounded

I really didn't know what to say

After all it's not like it happens every day

In fact it's never happened to me before

I was so used to getting rejected

I'd gone through high school unnoticed

Honestly I blame low self-esteem

And years of being told I wasn't good enough

I'll never forget the dejected look on your face

As I stammered my way through some lame excuse

I still think of you and wonder what if

I'd mustered up the courage to say yes
