Not Worth the Time

Not Worth the Time

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I wasn't musically inclined

Not every child is

You can't force them to succeed

At something they're just not good at

because no amount of practice

Will lead to perfection

You called me out in front of everyone

Sent me out into the hallway

Like it was my fault I had small hands

That made it difficult to play

I was already an outcast

So thanks for giving them another reason

You took everything so seriously

Like playing that stupid plastic thing

Was some life skill I just couldn't live without

Well I seem to have managed just fine

So I guess it was a waste of your time

You don't need to get so worked up over me

I dreamed of playing the string bass

And for five years I did

I wasn't great but I kept on trying

I wanted so much to earn your praises
But there were days I wondered

If you even remembered I existed

He played the same instrument as me

Only he was a lot better at it

You treated him like he was some kind of king

Invested all your time in him

because he had all the potential

A year later he quit too

So I guess it was a waste of your time

I hope you know I left because of you

I gave up my dream because I felt ignored

I wouldn’t stay when I was unappreciated

And you were breaking every ounce of my self esteem

I wasn't musically inclined

And so I wasn't worth your time

I'm so glad I gave up on the whole music thing

Now I'm sticking to what I'm good at

because I've got all the talent in the world

And you're not worth my time
