I Never Thought

I Never Thought

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas
"

This is not about any one marriage, but about divorce in general. This is how I imagine I would feel if I were married and things fell apart and we got divorced.

"

I never imagined this would be me

That I would ever be standing right here

In a court room looking at you

Asking you one last time is this what you really want?

I never dreamed this would be me

Shaking your hand with a smile on my face

While meanwhile holding back the tears that want to flow

Because I'd been secretly hoping you'd say no

I never thought this would be me

Packing up my things into cardboard boxes

Moving out, on my own for the first time in ten years

It wasn't too late until we signed those blasted papers

I never imagined this would be me

That I would be taking off my wedding ring

Because as soon as it was official you were moving on

Introducing her to our kids as their new step-mom

I never dreamed this would be me

That I'd be selling my wedding dress at a garage sale

Because I was a stay at home mom

Because I always assumed that I'd have you to rely on

I never thought this would be me

I honestly didn't think you'd go through with it

I thought for sure you were going to change your mind

That you would never do this to our family

I never imagined I'd be standing here

I never dreamed you'd leave me for another

I never thought you'd give up on everything that we'd created together

And never for a second did it cross my mind that you'd say yes
