16. Replaced

16. Replaced

A Chapter by Haley Lynn Thomas
"

You can't throw away friends like you do toys.

"

You put me in the back of your closet

With alL of your old dolls

The ones you don’t play with anymore

I sit there collecting dust

I was fun to play with

Until the christmas I was replaced

With A new doll that could walk and talk

I wasn’t that fancy

I was old news once she came along

She was pretty and I was Used

I had crayola crayon marks all over my face

And my hair was tangled in ratty knots

I didn’t mind the wear and teaR

Because it meant that you loved me

I never thought that I would be replaced

I guess that was my mistake

Because now I’m in the back of your closet

Where it’s cold and dark

And the only thing that keeps me sane

Is knowing that she won’t last half As long as I did

Author's Note

Haley Lynn Thomas
This poem is about a girl who was a friend of mine when I was younger. In fact, she was my best friend. Then her mom homeschooled her for a year and we grew apart. When she returned to school I expected we would resume our friendship but she'd completely changed. She was now Miss Popular and I wasn't good enough for her. I used the doll analogy because I remember being at her house playing with her American Girl Dolls.
