43. Sympathy River

43. Sympathy River

A Chapter by Haley Lynn Thomas
"

It's raining again.

"

I tried to fix you

But I'm not a mechanic

No, I'm not a doctor

I'm not a therapist

And even they would be lost with you

Glue can't hold you together

Pills won't keep you sane

Music can't drown out your sorrow

Sleeping won't make the pain go away

You can only escape it for a brief while

My sympathy flowed like a river

But I'm in the midst of a drought

It hasn't rained here in four years

I can't fill it with my tears

When you keep sucking them up

I'm done trying to fix you

Because I'm not a doctor

And I can't glue you back together

I'm exhausted and weary

And my sympathy river has run dry

Author's Note

Haley Lynn Thomas
This poem is about my frustration. It's about when you try to reach out to someone and help them but they won't accept the help. I remember talking to my mom and saying "I'm a very understanding person, and my sympathy flows like a river, but my river is running dry." WIth those words I wrote this poem.
