69. Letter

It's too late.

Last night I found a letter

I recognized your handwriting

But I was too scared to open it

To afraid of what it might say

It's been thirty years

Since I last saw you

We're both married now

And I have four kids

You've got three of you own

And a cushy job working for the government

You ask me if I ever got your letter

And I lie and say “No, I didn't”

Then we go our separate ways again
And when I get back home

I finally open up that letter

And this is what I read:

I know it's been thirty years

Since I saw you last

I wonder if you're married now?

And if you have any kids?

It was such a long time ago

That day I broke you heart

But I still think of you almost every day

I still regret the day I let you go

I hope you've moved on

You deserve to find happiness

I'd say I've moved on too

But I've never forgotten you

After I read your letter

I crinkled it up and threw it in the fire

I'd love to say that there are no hard feelings

But I still remember the day you broke my heart
