96. Stars

96. Stars

A Chapter by Haley Lynn Thomas

Last night I was thinking over the message you left me

Listening to your voice for the first time in weeks

You said you wanted to give it another go

You said let’s relive the first night of our relationship...

Let’s go for a walk in the park after dark

Get lost counting the stars in the sky

For this one night let’s be irresponsible, irrational

Let’s get high on this newfound feeling

Let’s go for a ride on my motorcycle

Speed down this long, empty highway

Stop at a diner in the middle of nowhere

Laugh so hard we can’t think straight anymore

Let’s learn every inch of each other

Memorize the way our bodies move together

Like that very first night, before all the fights

When it was magic, right before it became tragic

Let’s forget all the reasons why we broke up

Recreate the passion that we both felt

It was volatile and made no sense at all

We were burning with hate, bursting with love

It’s not something we should be repeating

But I hope you’ll meet me in the park after dark tonight

I’m not interested in being responsible or sensible

I just want to make some magic happen

And even though I know I shouldn’t

I put down my phone and put on my jacket

I head out the door to get lost in the stars

For one night forget about the inevitable end
