The Great Divide

The Great Divide

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

My arms are open

Outstretched and reaching for you

Inviting you inside of them

Ready to embrace you once again

My heart is open

Yearning to beat alongside yours

Close enough to fill the great divide

But far enough apart to take it back

I’m ready to forgive the past

I’m hesitant to give you back

I’m as vulnerable as I’ve ever been

But you won’t let me in

I desired to give myself to you

Because I fervently loved you

I got down on my knees and begged you

And said “my heart is longing for you”

But your heart was closed

And you widened the great divide

Far enough apart that it couldn’t be mended

But my arms forever remain open
