Fireflies

Fireflies

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I spent the weekend with your family

At their log cabin by the lake

And so many fond memories were made

We didn’t have our laptops

Our cell phones didn’t get any reception

But we weren’t lacking for interaction

Instead of the radio we had crickets

Instead of movies we had ghost stories

And instead of electricity we had fireflies

In the morning we took out the canoe

That afternoon we went fishing

And that evening we sang around the campfire

Instead of a drive we went for a swim

Instead of a rush we took our good old time

And instead of texting we actually talked

We rose early to watch the sunrise

We sat on the porch and watched as it set

And for a moment the rest of the world faded away

And I started to really appreciate

How the simplest things can be the ones

That you remember for a lifetime

Because instead of video games we had checkers

We didn’t have meaningless distractions

And instead of night lights we had fireflies
