This Family

This Family

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

This family isn't as perfect
As this photograph suggests
We have our bumps and bruises
We don't always get along

Through the plastered on smiles
You can't see the cracks
It seems like a solid foundation
But take a closer inspection

Sometimes we bicker all night
We have blowout fights in the car
Feelings inevitably get hurt
Nothing slices deeper than words

But despite all of the dramatics
And all the waring personalities
Are the underlying good intentions
And the truest form of love there is

Big sister comes to the rescue
Dad severs the tension with a laugh
Mom holds her daughters together
And little sister is just happy to tag along

No family is as perfect
As the framed picture on the wall
We drive each other to the edge
But then talk them off the ledge

A few things can be said for us
We certainly aren't boring
And we may have some gaping holes
But I'd take us over perfect any day

'But I'd take us over perfect any day.' And there you have it, all that really counts, encapsulated in a single line.

Beccy.
