Odes

Odes

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I don’t know how to reach you

I know you’ll never read this

So maybe me writing this is pointless

Because it won’t change a thing

There’s a reason I’m a poet

It gives me the liberty to say

Things I never could to your face

It gives me courage I don’t posses

People read these words and think

That they know everything

They try and read between the lines

And misconstrue the message

I write that you’re selfish

I say I’m better off without you

I may even claim to hate you

But that’s because I can’t say I love you

I can’t tell you I need you

That I’m stronger when I’m with you

That you’ll always be the one I want

So instead I shut you out

How is it I can be so brave

How can the words flow so freely

From my pen onto my paper

But never from my mouth

If you ever stumble across this notebook

Filled with odes to you

I hope you know me well enough

To tell what I really meant
