Until

Until

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

When people say their vows

They no longer take them seriously

Instead of to death do us part

I think we should change it to:

Until I get sick of you

Until I decide we’re through

Until I determine that giving up

Is easier than trying to fix us

Until you get on my nerves

Until you say one wrong thing

Until I decide I’m wasting my time

Until we have our first argument

So what if we have history?

Clearly this one little misunderstanding

Means that we aren’t right

Because true couples never fight, right?

When I said in sickness and health

I really meant I won’t stick around that long

When I said for richer or poorer

I meant until I find someone better

Matrimony has become a joke

Back in the days of our grandparents

You didn’t run away at the first sign of trouble

You worked through it and stayed together

Well when I said to death do us part

I hope you know I meant it with all my heart

Even when I am sick of you

I will always see us through
